In New Delhi, Shahana Goswami was born. Her mother is an editing consultant, and her father is an economist. She studied at Sophia College in Mumbai and Sardar Patel Vidyalaya in Delhi. She studied the Odissi dance technique under Guru Padmashri Kiran Segal for ten years. She has traveled widely and used to give numerous performances with her dance group.

Through her theater community, Goswami met Shaanu Sharma, a talent scout. He asked her to try out for a part in Naseeruddin Shah’s debut feature film, Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota. When she later visited the production company for another job, she happened to get the minor part of Boman Irani’s daughter in Reema Kagti’s Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. 

In the meantime, she went to an audition for the prominent role in Percept Picture Company’s Ru Ba Ru, directed by Arjun Bali, with Randeep Hooda as her co-star. When Goswami experienced Ru Ba Ru, she was still a college student finishing her degree. Much earlier than when she was hired by Rock On, she gave her first performance for the movie in Bangkok.

Later, she gave the audition for the movie Rock On. She was cast as Debbie, which was her big break. She won the Filmfare Best Actress (Critics) award for her work. The 2013 film version of Salman Rushdie’s Booker Prize-winning book “Midnight’s Children” by Deepa Mehta was Goswami’s first foreign endeavor.
