Advani began his career as a director’s assistant for Saeed and Aziz Mirza in Naya Nukkad (1994), and his debut as a co-screenwriter for Iss Raat Ki Subah Nahin (1996) received positive reviews. He later served as Karan Johar’s associate director on his first two films, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (2001). In Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Advani, and Farah Khan both made acting cameos. 

In 2003, Advani made his directorial debut with the widely praised movie Kal Ho Naa Ho. Along with producing films under the Emmay name, he has also directed several of them. For instance, Satyameva Jayate (2018), Baazaar (2018), Marjaavaan (2019), Indoo Ki Jawani (2020), Bell Bottom (2021), and Satyameva Jayate 2 (2021). Hasmukh, his debut web series, was created and co-written by Advani in 2020 for Netflix. The program was developed by Applause Entertainment and Adavni’s Emmay Entertainment.
