He received his degree in civil engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi in 2003. After earning his engineering degree, Varun started working as a software consultant at an MNC in Pune. 

He desired to become a writer, so in 2004, he quit his work and relocated to Mumbai. By 2006, he had earned several television gigs, including “Dus Ka Dum,” “Oye! It’s Friday!” and others, which allowed him to explore the humorous side of his writing by penning jokes for The Great Indian Comedy Show. Since they are his passion, these gigs gave him a tremendous confidence boost. 

Up until around 2010, Varun’s television writing work grew steadily. He later agreed to work as a dialogue writer on a project called “Accident on Hill Road,” though he wasn’t much with the theme. A few years later, he met successful director Anurag Kashyap. For films like “Girl in the Yellow Boots” (2011), “Gangs of Wasseypur I” (2012), and “Gangs of Wasseypur II” (2012), he wrote the scripts. Once more, he collaborated with the director on Bombay Velvet as an actor.
