Showkat Nanda’s Early life and Education, Work, and More

Baramulla, a town in Jammu & Kashmir, is where Nanda was born and raised. Before enrolling at the University of Kashmir, he majored in science at Government Degree College in Baramulla, where he earned a master’s degree in mass communication and journalism. Nanda spent several years as a reporter and photographer for regional newspapers in Srinagar. In 2014, he graduated from the University of Missouri with an M.A. in photojournalism after being awarded a Fulbright Fellowship.

He was a young boy growing up in the Kashmir Valley when separatist rebels launched an uprising against the Indian security forces occupying the predominantly Muslim region. His work primarily focused on the social and cultural effects of the conflict in Kashmir and its aftermath. Since 2007, Showkat has conducted workshops and taught photography at several colleges and universities. He also has almost a decade of experience teaching college and university students. He currently works for The New York Times as a contributing photographer.

He has won numerous accolades in his over ten-year photojournalistic career, including the “Picture of the Year” at the MFI National Press Photo Contest 2011. He received the CSE Climate Change Photography Award in 2015, and the VII Agency and EyeEm named him one of the “20 Storytellers of Tomorrow.” He was awarded a grant from the Magnum Emergency Fund in 2016 for his research on Kashmiri mothers whose loved ones have vanished.

He occasionally collaborates with neighborhood activist organizations like the Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons, which seeks to draw attention to the problem by organizing frequent rallies and demonstrations of mothers and spouses who have lost a loved one. 

Nanda’s works have also been published in many books in addition to his contributions to other international publications. In the publications Witness Kashmir 1986-2016 / Nine Photographers, he is one of the nine contributing photographers whose images have been collected. Nanda contributed the first chapter to Fahad Shah’s book Of Occupation and Resistance: Writings from Kashmir.

Trivia or Amazing Facts about Showkat Nanda

  • Do you know? Nanda was just eight when his older brother, who was then seventeen, departed to cross into Pakistan. He was never heard from again by his family. After a long year, they learned he died while on the journey. 
  • Nanda’s cousin Parvaiz was among a group of nonviolent protestors at Cement Bridge in December 1989 who was shot by police and died.
