Krishna Kaul’s childhood, early work, debut music, and moreĀ

Krishna Kaul was born to a Kashmiri Pandit family in Delhi on October 4, 1987. He was raised and attended school there for a while during a portion of his childhood. At fourteen, Kaul began rapping to fit in with the other students at his London school. 2006 Kaul began writing songs and posting them to his MySpace profile. By 2008, he had developed a modest local following in New Delhi and had recorded with artists from the United States and Canada.

His first big break came in 2010 when the “Kaisa Mera Desh” music video was released. It was the first Indian hip-hop song on YouTube and quickly rose to the #2 spot among India’s most popular music videos. In 2013, he also made a song called “Vijay” with the global NGO Save The Children.

After a few infrequent underground releases, Kaul changed his stage name from Prozpekt to KR$NA after earning a record deal with Universal Music in 2013. His debut album Sellout, an all-English effort on Universal Music, was released in May 2014. Its lead single, “Last Night,” peaked at number five on the Vh1 Music Charts in India. Other partners include Ankit Khanna and Raftaar.
