His pursuit of higher education continued as he earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in marketing from the esteemed Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA), in 1997. After completing his MBA in 1997, Bhagat ventured into the world of finance. He secured a job at Peregrine Investments Holdings in Canada through his campus placement. 

His next career move took him to the bustling financial world of Goldman Sachs in Hong Kong, where he worked as an investment banker. In between his banking responsibilities, he dedicated much of his time to writing, diligently working on drafts of his first novel, “Five Point Someone.” It took two years, but Rupa Publications accepted his manuscript, offering to publish it. This marked the beginning of his literary journey.

By 2006, he had become the vice president of the Strategic Investment Group at Deutsche Bank in Hong Kong. His second novel, “One Night @ the Call Center,” published in 2005, became a best-seller and catapulted him to national acclaim. In March 2008, Bhagat returned to India, accompanied by his wife and three-year-old twin sons. He joined Deutsche Bank’s distressed assets team in Kodak House, Mumbai. The same year, his third novel, “The 3 Mistakes of My Life,” was published and swiftly sold seven lakh (700,000) copies in just three months.
