She started the Humans of Bombay Facebook page in January 2014 after being inspired by photographer Brandon Stanton’s Humans of New York (HoNY) page. In 2013, she came across the HoNY page and searched for a page for Mumbai; when she couldn’t locate one, she built a logo and a Facebook page independently. She had two interns with her at first. By 2018, her team had grown to six permanent employees in Mumbai and several freelancers from various regions of India.
Humans of Bombay converted to its website, much like the HONY page. In the first attempt to actively earn funds to support their official website, Karishma compiled her writings—including those not yet published online—into a self-published book, Humans of Bombay, in 2016.
