She finished her studies at Ludhiana’s Harvest International School. Kaur graduated from Lady Shri Ram College for Women with a degree in literature. She pursued her MSc in Modern South Asian Studies at Oxford University’s Somerville College. 

When JNU students Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid Shora were invited to a campus seminar in February 2017, clashes between members of the Students Federation of India (SFI) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) took place at Ramjas College. During this, Gurmehar Kaur first gained attention as a “Save DU campaign member.” She was previously in the headlines due to a video she made.
