Her brother Vikram Chandra is a novelist who divides his time between California and India, while her sister Tanuja Chandra is an Indian film director and screenwriter. 

She spent a good deal of her teenage years living in Hong Kong. She received a BA in English Literature from St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai in 1987. Later, Chopra obtained her MA in journalism at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. While a student at Medill, she received the Harrington Award for “academic excellence and promise for success in the field of magazine journalism.” 

Chopra began her career as a film critic and journalist. Since 1993, she has published articles about the Hindi film industry for print, broadcast, and digital publications. Chopra hosted the movie review program on the NDTV 24X7 news channel in 2012. She began hosting “The Front Row with Anupama Chopra”, a weekly review program, on Star World in 2012. The program ran until June 2014. She published two books in 2013: “100 Films to See Before You Die”, which was based on her weekly cinema columns, and “Freeze Frame”, which was based on the filmmaker and actor interviews from the TV show. 

Chopra is married to Hindi film producer and director Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Zuni Chopra, her daughter, was born around 2001 and is the author of three books, including a novel and two poetry collections. Agni Dev Chopra, her son, is passionate about cricket.
